I have to say that the scary people in the book are nightmarish compared to the movie.
The Other Mother and (final form) Other Father could easily scare the bejeezus outta you

I imagine the Other Mother to be the same in the book because I saw the movie before I read the book...but she turned out to be an anorexic T-Rex Dracula.
The Other Father reminded me of a grilled cheese sandwich.

I liked the other father in his grubby form in the book... though it creeped me out majorly. XD If they followed the book exactly the movie could have been PG-13! o:

I didn't like him as a pumpkin. I didn't like the worm thing much either coz it creeped me out D8, but it's better than pumpkins to me.

MEOW!!
Though, I really dun think it was scary period. The last times I remember being scared of the movie was when I watched it in the middle of the night, in the dark, during a thunderstorm. And the time I watched it with my family in 3D after I got it on DVD. I wasn't scare though in the movie theater. I dunno why I was scared one time, but not the other.
And the Last time I remember being scared while reading the book was never.
I'm a brave girl with some things, But this morning (The Morning of August 2nd 2009. Just in case you read this on another day), where I live, we got this huge storm which knocked out my cell phone signal, meaning, no way to call with it, and then Internet got a little screwy. and a bunch of other things. I woke up from this huge crack of thunder, which shook my house, cause my house is old like Coraline's. (Only mine isn't 150 years old.) Now that storm was enough to scare me.
But the Coraline Movie and Book have a scare factor of about 2 when you watch it during the day, 5 when you watch it at night, with or without 3D glasses (For both day and night) ,and if you watch it during a storm, with or without 3D glasses, Day or Night, the scare factor is 9 or 10.
(I hope i didn't confuse you. PM me if you dun get what I said.)

I remember not being SCARED per say, but YES frightened at the extent of how Coraline feels in the movie, freaked out at certain parts as much as she was. ESPECIALLY the first time I saw it! THAT is why it left such an impression on me! C:<

I didn't find the book extremly creepy but I think The Other Mother seemed a lot more darker in movie than the book.
