I always see people who say they dislike the movie because it strays too far from the book. And I respect that, I do! But you have to keep in mind that it differed on purpose to some degree. I read in the Visual Companion to the movie, that Selick had actually written a version that was extremely true to the book, but Gaiman and Selick agreed that that script was too faithful to the book, he wanted something different, he didn't want it to be exactly as the book was. In a sense, the movie is the story through Selick's eyes, it's HIS version of the story. You can't compare the movie to the book, because it's an unfair comparison. Because the movie isn't the book, it's a different mind's view of the story.
In defense of the character Wybie, whom Selick put in the movie himself, even Neil Gaiman himself admires the character, because he knows why he's there. He's there to give Coraline someone to talk to, someone her own age that will listen(sort of)that she can share her thoughts with. Can you honestly imagine Coraline walking around through the entire movie talking to herself? It works in a book, yes, but not a movie. Or, the other options to adding an extra character for her to talk to, as quoted by Gaiman himself (or Henry, I forget) it that the only other option would be for Coraline to narrate the story herself, or break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience, now, imagine THAT scenario if you will.
I think the movie serves it's purpose, it provides a different point of view into the world of Coraline, as seen from a different mind. It's unfair to compare the movie to the book, there is no comparison, because the two are stories seen from different eyes.
I hope no one attacks me for this D: As I said I respect you if you don't like the movie! I just wanted to shine a little light on the subject...I think I got a little long winded! <|D

yeah, it does. Coraline has more personality in the movie.
another thing that really bugs me is that some people think it's a bad movie because of the near naked other Miss Forceable. my friend isn't allowed to watch it because of that. I plan on watching it the night of my birthday party (if I have one), and her dad said she can't watch it, even if I fast forward through that part or have her not look at the screen that time. soooo annoying.

Yeah seriously, that's messed up, it's comical, it's not vulgar! It's like, giving you something to laugh at before the movie gets really serious! D:

So when I have a sleep over with her, she can't watch it.... that's what my friends mom is like. she hates witches and stuff, and her kids aren't allowed to dress up as "evil" things for Halloween. they're also not allowed to watch movies like The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Anastasia. who knows what else they're not allowed to watch. but they can watch shows like Monk, which is a murder show. is that messed up or what?

That is definitely messed up! D:< they also don't like this one show I really like called Edgar & Ellen (dunno if anyone's heard of it), because their dad said "they're mean to each other." well, that's what brothers and sisters do, they fight (Edgar and Ellen are brother and sister-twins, in fact) so annoying.
